The Kitchen by Arnold Wesker plays at Theatro Kivotos in Gazi, directed by Giorgos Koutlis, with Michalis Sarantis in the lead. Fourteen actors turn the stage into a restaurant kitchen at full capacity — orders overlap, tempers spike, someone burns a pan, and the rhythm never drops below urgent.
Wesker wrote the play in 1956 from his own years in restaurant kitchens. It has since toured more than thirty countries. Koutlis directs the company through 110 minutes of unbroken service — a workplace allegory that processes humans as efficiently as it processes food.
If you want polished drawing-room theater, this kitchen does not pause. But if you want to watch a system consume the people running it, Koutlis builds the pressure until the room feels overheated.
Theatro Kivotos is at Pireos 115, a short walk from Kerameikos metro. Curtain at 20:00. Tickets from EUR 20 through more.com. Seventy years old and not a day closer to outdated.
