In Detail

Barbara Kruger: Untitled (Pride and Contempt)

ΚΠΙΣΝ · Tuesday 28 April 2026 · Free

A 90-meter text mural wraps the façade of the National Library of Greece, flanked by installations running both banks of the SNFCC Canal. Barbara Kruger has translated her vocabulary of power, belief, and public language into Greek for the first time — thirteen site-specific works commissioned by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for the cultural center's outdoor spaces. This is Kruger's first solo exhibition in Greece, curated by Katerina Stathopoulou.

Sensory Friendly προβολή | Park Your Cinema: Τραγουδώντας στη βροχή (1952)

ΚΠΙΣΝ · Friday 14 August 2026 · Free

The volume comes down from the start, the space never goes fully dark, and no one turns to shush you if you stand, walk the perimeter, or talk through a scene. This is a Sensory Friendly screening: an open-air showing of Singin' in the Rain built for people on the autism spectrum and anyone for whom a standard cinema — loud, dark, fixed in place — is more barrier than pleasure. Singin' in the Rain (1952), directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, is set in 1927 Hollywood at the moment silent pictures gave way to sound, as a studio scrambles to turn a silent romance into a talkie.

Kevin de Vries I Sat Aug 15

Bolivar · Saturday 15 August 2026 · €15

On Dekapentavgoustos itself — the national holiday when most of Athens empties toward the islands — Kevin de Vries arrives at Bolivar for a Blend Athens night on the Alimos terrace. The German DJ broke through with Cocoon and Drumcode releases and now holds a place inside the Afterlife stable, where his melodic techno builds trance-shaped tension through long, escalating arcs.

Rave Ritual

2ten · Saturday 15 August 2026 · €9

Rave Ritual books the Saturday of the 15 August weekend at 2ten, the basement techno room at Ermou 135 in Thiseio, with a billing that starts one minute before midnight. The date is the point. Dekapentavgoustos empties Athens for the islands and the villages, and for that one night the rooms still open play to whoever stayed behind — a thinner, more deliberate crowd than an August Saturday draws. 2ten programmes techno and almost nothing else, in a low central basement rather than a coastal terrace, with entry through Resident Advisor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best things to do in Athens, Greece this weekend?

This page lists the top events happening across Athens this weekend, updated every Thursday. Expect 60–100+ events across the city on a typical weekend. Friday and Saturday nights are strongest for concerts, nightlife, and late-running theater. Sunday is quieter but ideal for exhibitions, open-air cinema (in summer), and matinee rebetiko. The SNFCC alone often runs three to five weekend events. Scroll down for editorial picks with honest assessments.

Which Athens neighborhoods are best for a night out this weekend?

Gazi is the densest nightlife cluster — south of Pireos Street is where the serious clubs are, with venues like Technopolis hosting cultural events. Psyri and Monastiraki offer bar-hopping and late-night restaurants. Exarchia has the most alternative live music, with An Club, Fuzz Club, and IT Athens drawing loyal crowds. Kolonaki is the upscale option for cocktail bars and gallery events. Most neighborhoods are walkable from each other in under 20 minutes.

How do I buy tickets for weekend events in Athens?

Most event tickets in Athens are sold through more.com (formerly viva.gr), which is the dominant ticketing platform in Greece. International events also appear on Eventbrite. For the Athens Epidaurus Festival (June–August), book early at aefestival.gr — the Odeon of Herodes Atticus shows sell out. Many smaller venues and clubs sell tickets only at the door — arrive by 22:00 for popular nights. Card payment is widely accepted, though some smaller venues still prefer cash.

Is Athens, Greece affordable for weekend cultural events?

Athens is significantly cheaper than London, Berlin, or New York for nightlife and culture. Club entry typically costs €8–15. Live concerts range from €15–40 for major acts. Jazz clubs charge €8–15. Theater tickets run €12–25. Many exhibitions, gallery openings, and SNFCC events are open entry. A full evening out — dinner, drinks, and a show — can cost under €50 per person, which is roughly a third of what you’d spend in most Western European capitals.

What day trips can I take from Athens this weekend?

Aegina (1-hour ferry), Hydra and Sounio are popular options. However, this guide focuses on events within Athens — concerts, exhibitions and performances you can enjoy without leaving the city.

What's the difference between Saturday and Sunday events in Athens?

Saturdays feature more nightlife — DJ sets, concerts, theatre premieres. Sundays offer morning activities, exhibitions, family events and acoustic sessions. Many exhibitions run both days.

Are there family events in Athens this weekend?

Yes, every weekend brings children's shows, museum workshops, outdoor activities and kid-friendly exhibitions. Many museums offer free entry for minors.

What outdoor events are happening this weekend in Athens?

Athens hosts outdoor concerts, festivals, flea markets and theatrical events in squares and parks — mainly from spring through autumn. In winter, most events move indoors.

What to Expect

Weekends in Athens right now are packed. The indoor season is at full power and the first open-air events are appearing — which means overlap. You can catch a gallery opening in Kolonaki on Friday afternoon, a live concert in Gazi on Friday night, an exhibition and a matinee theater show on Saturday, and a rebetiko afternoon on Sunday that slides into evening without anyone noticing.

Friday and Saturday nights are the main event. Gazi clubs fill after midnight. Exarchia’s live music venues start at 21:00–22:00 and run late. The theater scene peaks on weekend evenings across 100+ stages. If you’re choosing between options — and in Athens right now, you will be — use the curated picks at the top of this page.

Sunday is an underrated cultural day in Athens. Matinee rebetiko is a genuine experience (Stoa Athanaton in the Psyri area, starting at 13:00). The Acropolis Museum stays open late in the evenings. SNFCC often runs its biggest family programming on Sundays. And the flea market at Monastiraki Square is an event in itself — arrive before 11:00 for the best finds.

For this weekend specifically: check whether any national holidays fall on the calendar. Greece has frequent public holidays that can extend weekends and change venue schedules. Museum open entry days (first Sunday of the month, November–March) are worth planning around. The weather in March is usually mild enough for walking between neighborhoods but carry a layer — Athens evenings still cool down after sunset. All events on this page are confirmed for this weekend and updated every Thursday.
