The five men on stage at Theatro Mavili are not playing characters — they are telling their own stories. Poustara is documentary theatre built from the testimonies of its own cast, directed by Evangelos Lalos, tracing what it has meant to be a gay man in Greece across two decades — from the years when television could be fined for the wrong broadcast to the arrival of marriage equality and adoption rights.
Running 75 minutes without interval, Poustara reclaims a word once thrown as a slur and makes it the title. The cast — Ilias Vogiatzidakis, Dimitris Eleftheriadis, Panagiotis Theodorakopoulos and others — share the small Ambelokipi stage with live musician Stelios Tsantes.
Mavili stages this one only on Mondays and Tuesdays, the quiet nights of the theatre week, which keeps the room intimate and the crowd self-selected. The run opens 1 June and continues through the month; recommended for ages 15 and up.
If you want plot and spectacle, look elsewhere. But if you want unscripted lives spoken plainly, this is the rarer thing.
