A restaurant kitchen at full service — orders barked, pans slamming, a full brigade of cooks and waiters colliding in choreographed chaos until the machine overheats. That's Arnold Wesker's The Kitchen (I Kouzina), which Giorgos Koutlis returns to Theatro Kivotos for a second year, an ensemble of 14 actors and musicians led by Michalis Sarantis.
Written in 1956 and staged in more than 30 countries since, Wesker's play uses the kitchen as a blunt metaphor for labour: people ground down by the pace of work, snatching moments of tenderness between tickets. Koutlis stages it close to real time, so the exhaustion accumulates on you too.
If you want gentle, plotted theatre, this brawling ensemble piece isn't it. If you want bodies and rhythm carrying the meaning, it is.
Theatro Kivotos sits on Pireos in Gazi, a five-minute walk from Keramikos metro; curtain 20:00. Come for the wordless mid-play lull — the kitchen's one held breath — as much as the roar.
