Stavros Xarchakos sits at the center of a seven-piece orchestra inside Pallas Theatre on Voukourestiou. The program is 5 Laikes Morfes — five folk figures — spanning Markos Vamvakaris, Vassilis Tsitsanis, Manos Hadjidakis, Mikis Theodorakis, and Xarchakos himself. Iro Saia sings.

Xarchakos has composed for over six decades. He studied with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and David Diamond at Juilliard, then returned to Athens and scored the film Rembetiko. He directed the National Orchestra of Greek Music.

The audience knows these songs by heart and comes to hear what a master arranger does with material the whole country already owns.

If you want pop concert energy and a standing crowd, this is seated and attentive. But if you want to hear bouzouki, accordion, and double bass reshape songs you grew up with, Xarchakos conducts with six decades of authority.
