To Megalo Mas Tsirko, a show by Iakovos Kampanellis at Theatron in Tavros, Athens, on 13 March 2026, fills the stage with an eight-piece orchestra and twenty actors. The curtain rises on a circus ring, and 135 minutes of Greek history unfold in allegory, satire, and song.
Kampanellis wrote the work in 1973. Within months, the military junta shut the production down and arrested the original leads, Jenny Karezi and Kostas Kazakos. The work survived them. Stavros Xarchakos composed the score — the same hand behind the Rembetiko film soundtrack. Petros Zoulias directs this revival, with Eleonora Zouganeli and Dimitris Gotsopoulos leading a company that spans comedy, drama, and political allegory from Ottoman occupation through civil war.
If you prefer intimate theater with a small cast, this fills a hall with twenty actors and a live orchestra. But if you want political theater that earned its scars, this work was censored for saying what needed saying.
Theatron at Hellenic World Cultural Center, Pireos 254 in Tavros. Tickets EUR 16 to EUR 65.
The work outlasted the regime that tried to silence it.
