What is a masterpiece worth when a bankrupt state decides to sell it? In Ο πίνακας (The Painting), the European Union has collapsed, the government is auctioning off cultural heritage, and Velázquez's Las Meninas is first on the block — but only after a soft-spoken nun, gifted at copying, produces a flawless replica.

Spanish playwright Ernesto Caballero's satire reaches Greece for the first time, directed by Michalis Panadis at Theatro Psyrri. Ioanna Pappa, Youli Tsagaraki and Angelos Andriopoulos play it at speed, turning a story about deepfakes, idols and the worship of image into 90 minutes of political comedy.

If you want gentle escapism, this sharp-edged farce is not it. But if you like satire that admits the joke is us, take a seat.

The Greek premiere of Ο πίνακας opens 15 October 2026 in central Psyrri, a short walk from Monastiraki metro. Tickets 16 to 18 EUR.
