Theofilos Hatzimichail painted Greece onto walls and shop shutters for a few coins and a meal — a self-taught folk artist mocked in his lifetime and canonised after it. «Theofilos Sold», written by Samson Raka and directed by Olia Lazaridou, turns that life into a tragicomedy for all ages, borrowing the grammar of folk performance and circus. Haris Charalambos Kazepis plays Theofilos, with Ariadni Konstantakopoulou alongside him. The production returns this October to a central Athens stage, Theatro Psyrri, after runs at the Athens School of Fine Arts, the Fougaro centre in Nafplio, and the Old University in Plaka — a tested staging finding a 186-seat home near Monastiraki metro. If you want straight biography, look elsewhere; this leans on clowning and colour. But if you want Theofilos told in his own folk-art register, Lazaridou's staging delivers it. Doors open onto Psyrri's busiest evening streets, so arrive early to settle in.
