The cast plays the text like a score — voices used as instruments, silences timed like rests. Ektoras Lygizos calls this 'musical realism,' and applies it to Chekhov's last play, finished months before he died.

In The Cherry Orchard, an aristocratic family returns to its estate to find it mortgaged beyond saving, and talks about everything except the auction that will take the orchard. Lygizos directs an eleven-strong ensemble and steps in himself as Lopakhin, the merchant's son whose rescue plan the family is too proud to hear. Amalia Moutousi plays Lyubov, the landowner who cannot stop spending. It is the first Cherry Orchard on the National's Central Stage in forty-one years.

If you want plot and resolution, Chekhov offers neither — only people missing each other in real time. But if you want the comedy and grief of a class watching its world end, this is his swan song.

Performances run from 28 November at the Ziller Building, accessible by metro near Omonia; tickets run €5 to €25.
