Wednesday 2 September 2026, a few minutes before 20:00: the light over the SNFCC (ΚΠΙΣΝ) turns gold, and in the space beside the Canal — the seawater channel that runs along the park's edge, not the lawn — a Hammond organ warms into its first chords. Sunset Frequencies has reached its sixth Wednesday, and this one belongs to the George Kontrafouris Baby Trio.

The series, fully titled Sunset Frequencies tuned by Hendrick's Gin, is new to the park this summer: seven Wednesdays from July to September, each one pairing the sunset hour with a small live act or a Greek DJ working across jazz, electronic, funk, indie, and soul. Music starts at 20:00, entry is open, and a Hendrick's cocktail bar sets up beside the water for the evening — the drink is the sponsor's idea, the soundtrack is the point.

George Kontrafouris is one of the most prolific figures in Greek jazz. Born in Athens, he studied classical piano at the National Conservatory, turned to jazz at sixteen, and took bachelor's and master's degrees in jazz performance at Finland's Sibelius Academy, establishing himself across Europe first as a pianist and then as a Hammond organist with a signature of his own. Baby Trio is his longest-running idea: a working band built as a school, where young players join, absorb the bandstand, and in time hand their chairs to the next generation — the organist stays, the trio keeps regenerating around him. The group has recorded for Puzzlemusik — the New Snack EP, The Main Course, and Urban Jazz — organ-trio groove played with the enthusiasm of musicians just discovering what a band can do.

The crowd is the park's own, layered by hour: office workers arriving straight off the tram, families whose evening walk happens to acquire a rhythm section, and listeners who plant themselves close because they recognize the name on the program. Nobody checks a ticket; people settle on ledges and open ground, wherever the sightline suits them.

An organ trio at dusk works differently from an organ trio in a basement. The groove is the same — bass walked on the pedals and left hand, drums locked underneath — but out here it spreads into open air and the slow change of light, and it wins by patience rather than volume. The younger players push; Kontrafouris answers.

If you want a dark room, a door policy, and a set that peaks at 03:00, this is the opposite of that. But if you want to hear a leading figure of Greek jazz run his youngest band at the exact hour Athens goes gold, this Wednesday is the one.

The SNFCC sits in Kallithea, toward the Faliro coast — no metro at the door, so take the tram, a bus, or the park's shuttle, and arrive before 20:00 to claim ground near the water. Entry is open; no ticket required.
