This is a final exam staged as a gala. The graduating dancers of the Greek National Opera's Higher Professional Dance School walk onto the Stavros Niarchos Hall stage to be assessed on a full evening of work — in front of a full house rather than a closed panel behind a desk.
Metamorphosis runs four choreographies end to end. It opens with Hommage, a neoclassical piece set to Vivaldi and built by the School's own teachers, Elisavet Vasova and Fotis Diamantopoulos. French dancer-choreographer Cyril Baldy reconstructs With Love and All That, first shown at the Paris Conservatory. Spanish choreographer Jesús Rubio Gamo contributes an excerpt of Gran Bolero, named best dance work of 2020 at Spain's MAX awards. A fourth piece is choreographed by the School's own student, Danae-Aikaterini Mitsiahi.
The Metamorphosis audience is dance families, current students, former dancers, and the small Athens public that follows who is coming up next rather than who is already a name. Applause here runs warmer and more invested than at a touring gala — half the house knows someone on stage.

The evening's arc is the point. From the upright lines and Vivaldi phrasing of Hommage to the looser, contemporary vocabulary of Gran Bolero, you watch the same young dancers switch registers inside a single night. Gran Bolero alone — Rubio Gamo's MAX-winning excerpt — asks them to hold a long, rolling crescendo without letting the form crack. It is a deliberate test of range, and the seams — the moments a body is reaching just past its training — are part of what you came to see.
If you want star principals and a famous full-length story ballet, this is not that evening. But if you want to see dancers at the exact threshold between school and company — technically finished, not yet branded — this is the rare night that catches them there.
The Stavros Niarchos Hall sits inside the SNFCC on the coast at Kallithea, reachable by tram or the Center's free shuttle from Syntagma. Both nights, 13 and 14 June, begin at 20:00. Admission is ticketed but free: priority tickets are released on 6 June at 12:00, online only through ticketservices.gr, and a graduation night like this empties fast.
This class dances Metamorphosis exactly twice and no more; by next season they will have scattered to companies across Europe and beyond.
