Medea murders her own children to punish the husband who cast her aside — Euripides' hardest tragedy, and the role Karyofyllia Karabeti first made hers in 1997. She returns to it twenty-nine years on, directed now by Nikita Milivojević, with Reni Pittaki as the Nurse and an ensemble of twelve.

The production sold out across its Athens dates before it had even premiered, which is why a second Lycabettus night was added in September once the July date went. At the open-air theatre on the summit of Lycabettus, the tragedy plays under the night sky above the lit city.

Getting there is its own ritual: no cars reach the top on show nights, so a free shuttle runs up from Sarantapichou Street in the hours before curtain — there is no metro to the summit. Arrive with time to climb.

If you want comfort and a short walk home, this is the wrong night out; if you want Karabeti's Medea where the staging earns its scale, it is the only way to see it this summer.
