"Can you tell me what you are wearing today?" Bella Freud opens her conversations with that question, and on Tuesday 15 December 2026 at 20:30 she brings it to the Main Stage of Onassis Stegi. Onassis Discussions pairs the British fashion designer with Afroditi Panagiotakou, Director of Culture at the Onassis Foundation, for an evening built on one idea from the Stegi's own framing: what we wear speaks before we do.
Freud's credentials are stitched into other people's wardrobes. Her knitwear with words and phrases, "Ginsberg is God" and "1970" among them, has become a modern classic, worn by Kate Moss, Alexa Chung, Rosamund Pike, Rashida Jones and Rebecca Ferguson. The work spills well past sweaters: knitwear, tailored suits and handwritten phrases for Marks & Spencer; her slogans as numbered art prints and screen prints with King & McGaw; collectible knitwear for Cave Things, Nick Cave's creative project; and three short films, "Strap Hanging", "Lady Behave" and "Hideous Man", made with John Malkovich.
Then came the podcast. "Fashion Neurosis with Bella Freud" lays fashion on the couch, a playful nod to her ancestor Sigmund Freud, and it reached No 1 on the UK arts podcast charts. Her guests have included Cate Blanchett, Rosalía, Rick Owens, Marina Abramović, David Cronenberg, Es Devlin, FKA twigs, David Byrne, Nick Knight and Annie Leibovitz, each asked to account for the clothes on their back.
The crowd this draws is the one that reads a coat before a face. Listeners who already know the opening question by heart. Costume and set people, stylists, students who keep a notebook of other people's jackets. Readers who treat an outfit as a sentence and want to hear someone parse it aloud, slowly, with a psychoanalyst's surname.
The setting is the Stegi's 880-seat Main Stage, given over to a conversation between two people. The vibe is a seated exchange, one designer and one interlocutor, not a runway show or a trade panel. The sound is spoken English, with simultaneous interpretation into Greek and into Greek Sign Language, so the evening is open to Greek speakers and Deaf visitors in real time. The start is 20:30 on a weeknight.
If you want a runway, product drops or a panel of trend forecasters, this is the wrong room. But if you want to hear how a slogan on a sweater becomes a personality, and how Bella Freud turns a question about clothes into a question about character, take a seat.
Onassis Stegi stands at Syngrou Avenue 107-109 in Neos Kosmos, accessible by metro and a roughly 12-minute walk from Syngrou-Fix station; buses stop at Panteion, next door. Full-price tickets are 20 or 25 EUR depending on seat, with reduced tiers for the unemployed and people with disabilities, sold through tickets.onassis.org. The Stegi's underground parking helps if you drive down Syngrou after work.
One December evening, one question about your clothes, and Onassis Discussions gives Bella Freud one night to answer it in front of Athens.
