Three weeks out from the 43rd Authentic Marathon, a room inside the Book Tower of the National Library of Greece fills with people carrying the same question in different words: what happens after kilometre thirty. Όλα για τον Μαραθώνιο (All About the Marathon) spends three and a quarter hours on it, 17:00 to 20:15 on a Saturday at the SNFCC (ΚΠΙΣΝ).
The programme comes from Sports Excellence, the athletic excellence department of the First Orthopaedic Surgery Clinic at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, working with the SNFCC. Closing the evening is a round table titled «42.195 μέτρα εμπειρίας» — the Greek marathon through the eyes of its champions — and the names in those chairs carry the record book with them. Spyros Andriopoulos set the Greek marathon record of 2:12:04 in Berlin in 1988, finished seventh in the 10,000 metres at the 1987 World Championships in Rome with a national record of 28:07.17, and ran the Olympic marathon in Atlanta in 1996. Nikos Polias took seven national marathon titles between 1993 and 2003, won the Authentic four times, and placed 24th in the Olympic marathon in Athens in 2004. Giorgos Stamoulis, Giota Vlachaki and Sofia Riga complete the panel.
The room draws runners of every level, coaches, and fitness and health professionals — a crowd split along a line you can see from the back: people who talk in splits and threshold pace, and people who entered one of the parallel 5km and 10km races in a moment of optimism and want to know whether the shoes matter.
Όλα για τον Μαραθώνιο runs eight talks before the panel, sequenced the way a training block is built rather than the way a conference usually runs — energy management and food, training methodology and monitoring, long runs and specific endurance, performance psychology, strength training, injury prevention, cardiovascular adaptations, and pacing strategy. That is an orthopaedic clinic's reading of 42.195 kilometres: tissue first, tactics last.
If you want a personal plan, a coach's hand on your shoulder and a number to hit on Tuesday, a lecture programme in a library gives you none of that. But if you want the physiology and the war stories in the same three hours, from the people who wrote both, this is the room.
Entry is open, and seating is limited and unreserved — the door works on arrival order, so come before 17:00 rather than at it. Simultaneous interpretation into Greek Sign Language runs throughout. The SNFCC sits on the Kallithea coast with no metro station of its own: take its free shuttle from central Athens, the tram down the coast, or the bus. The Book Tower stands behind the Library's glass façade, visible from the Agora before you ever get inside it.
Eight talks, five champions and no ticket — and the 43rd Authentic starts twenty-two days after Όλα για τον Μαραθώνιο clears the room.
