Christmas Hymns Byzantine Music Days Festival

The Christmas hymns come first, on 21 October. That is not a scheduling slip. The four nights of Days of Byzantine Music follow the church year instead of the calendar, opening at the Nativity and closing at an all-night vigil, so the music Athens normally meets in December arrives here while the evenings are still warm.

The cycle is curated by Zacharias Karounis, born in 1977 in Pakia, Laconia. He took a degree in Byzantine music at the Athens Conservatory and postgraduate work in Liturgics and Hymnology at the Theological School of Athens, then spent his performing life as much off the analogion as on it: productions at the National Theatre, Manos Hadjidakis's Orchestra of Colours, and long work alongside Domna Samiou, Giorgos Dalaras, Stavros Xarchakos and Mikis Theodorakis. He has gathered the four evenings under the title Genres and Generations of the Chanting Art Today, and staffed them accordingly, with historic choirs, established protopsaltes, younger voices, and women's chanting ensembles sharing the same platform.

The arc runs in liturgical order. Hymns of the Nativity on 21 October, hymns of the Divine Liturgy on 22 October, hymns of Holy Week and the Resurrection on 23 October, and hymns of the all-night vigil on 24 October. Attend one night and you get a season. Attend all four and you have walked a year.

The setting is the Greek National Opera's Alternative Stage inside the SNFCC (ΚΠΙΣΝ), a black box whose telescopic seating is dismantled and rebuilt for each production. That matters more here than usual, because this is chant lifted out of a church and set on a stage: no icon screen, no incense, no congregation standing behind you. The vibe is a concert hall's, seated and quiet. The sound is monophonic, a single melodic line carried over a held ison drone, moving through the eight modes that give the tradition its grammar. You will sit near cantors who chant this on Sunday mornings and are hearing it seated for the first time, near conservatory students following the modal shifts, and near people who came for the voices without any interest in the theology. Nobody applauds where a congregation would not, and then everybody applauds at the end.

Days of Byzantine Music belongs to the Alternative Stage's 2026 to 2027 season, the first time the house has organised its programme as a set of themed strands rather than a running calendar, under new artistic direction from composer Giannis Angelakis.

If you want polyphony and harmony, this repertoire declines both on principle. But if you want to hear what a single line of melody can do when the whole room is built around it, and to hear it sung by four generations of people who disagree about how, the Nativity night is where the sequence starts.

Getting there needs a plan. The SNFCC sits on the Kallithea coast with no metro station, so take the free SNFCC shuttle from central Athens, the tram, or a bus, and allow more time than the map suggests. Curtain at 20:30 on 21 October 2026.
