MyCenae

Mycenae, the citadel of the House of Atreus, hides a smaller word inside its name: 'my.' Valentini Giannopoulou's MyCenae takes that literally, staging the family's oldest wound as a mother and daughter locked in a mirror that never breaks — Clytemnestra and Electra, but also any mother and daughter who cannot look away from each other.

This is choreo-theatre, not tragedy recited. Giannopoulou's company Khelanem draws on Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, then hands the argument to the body: justice, revenge and the need to belong to yourself are fought out in movement — bodies colliding, recoiling and reaching where words go quiet. Spyros Syrmos writes the score, and a cast of seven carries the myth across 60 minutes without interval.

The neoclassical Municipal Theatre of Piraeus, a short walk from the Piraeus metro and the port, holds it for one night only. MyCenae plays at 20:30 on 6 September and then the House of Atreus goes dark — a single evening with this cast, no return date announced.
